Noah's Ark Bloom Garden

The Bloom Garden at Noah’s Ark at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles extends the museum’s beloved hands-on children’s exhibit into an outdoor landscape for nature-based play, sensory learning, exploration, and care for the living world.

Created as part of a new chapter for Noah’s Ark, the garden invites children and families to engage with plants, pollinators, water, food, storytelling, and ecology through hands-on experiences. The project reflects the Skirball’s mission to create meaningful cultural and educational experiences that inspire curiosity, connection, and responsibility.

The Work

Farmer D & Co. collaborated on the design and development of the Bloom Garden as part of the refreshed Noah’s Ark experience.

The work focused on creating a living landscape that would support children’s natural curiosity while deepening their connection to food, plants, pollinators, soil, water, and seasonal change.

The garden includes nature-based play, sensory pathways, edible and native plantings, gathering areas, and opportunities for children and families to explore the relationship between people and the natural world.

Impact

The Bloom Garden extends the Noah’s Ark experience beyond the museum walls, giving children and families a place to learn through movement, imagination, observation, and play.

The project demonstrates how gardens can become powerful educational landscapes within cultural institutions. By connecting young visitors to food, nature, ecology, and care for the earth, the Bloom Garden helps cultivate curiosity, empathy, and stewardship from an early age.

“Working with the Farmer D team has been an ideal partnership. The Noah’s Ark garden project added a totally original learning garden to our beloved family museum destination. The team delivered a mission-aligned, beautiful, sustainable design on time and on budget. They listened to us and kept the needs of our students and families as the priority throughout the process. We cannot wait to work with them again!”
