Serenbe Farms

Serenbe Farms is part of one of the most influential examples of conservation village development and biophilic community design, recognized nationally and internationally as an early model for the agrihood movement.

Located within Serenbe, a conservation community south of Atlanta, the farm was established as a defining element of the neighborhood’s identity, daily life, and connection to the land. Farmer D was hired in 2002 to establish Serenbe Farms on 25 acres of land with a focus on intensive vegetable production for a CSA, local restaurants, and farmers markets throughout Atlanta.

The WORK

The work included laying out fields, improving heavy clay soils, installing irrigation, building fencing, sourcing equipment, creating post-harvest infrastructure, and managing staff and apprentices.

From the beginning, the farm was designed to be both productive and relational — a place where residents, visitors, chefs, apprentices, and the broader community could connect to food, farming, and the land.

The farm was started several years before the first homes were built, giving future residents, visitors, and early supporters a tangible experience of Serenbe’s vision.

IMPACT

Serenbe Farms helped establish agriculture as a core part of Serenbe’s identity and became a widely recognized reference point for the agrihood movement in the U.S. and internationally.

By bringing the farm to life before the first homes were built, the project helped communicate Serenbe’s values from the beginning — not as a concept on paper, but as a living, working landscape.

“The farm at Serenbe has been a huge success. Daron took a worn-out piece of Georgia red clay and turned it into a vibrant certified organic farm. The sense of community and quality of life it brings to Serenbe is a great asset to our development.”
