Designed around the property’s historic concrete silos, the farm preserves an iconic piece of the site’s agricultural past while creating a new center of community life. What began as a master plan for a central community garden and event space has evolved into a partially managed urban farm and community garden hybrid, activated by resident participation, horticulture classes, weekly harvests, community meals, and neighborhood events.
The plan included several dozen raised beds, in-ground orchard plantings, edible landscaping and a hybrid model of professional farm management and resident garden participation.
The design also incorporated the property’s historic silos, transforming them into functional and symbolic anchors for the garden. The renovated farm hub includes a kitchen, fireplace, lounge, large dining table, commercial-grade grill, storage, bathrooms, back-of-house service court for garden operations.
The project shows how even a relatively small agricultural space can have significant impact when it is thoughtfully designed, well located, and supported by programming, operations, and resident participation.
“We were proud to have Farmer D & Co. design the Silo Farm at Rouzan. We built what they envisioned, and it came out beautifully. Years later, it has aged well and become one of those special places in the community that I’m always proud to show people.”
